What is autotransplantation?
Autotransplantation is a surgical procedure where a tooth from one location in the mouth is removed and then transplanted into another location, in the same individual's mouth.
Benefits of autotransplantation as a solution for missing teeth
Reduced Risk of Rejection
Since the transplanted tooth comes from the patient's own body, there is a lower risk of rejection or negative reaction compared to donor materials.
Preservation of Bone and Gum Tissue
Unlike dental implants, which requires bone grafting, autotransplantation generates bone and preserves both bone and gum tissue in the recipient site.
Natural Tooth Replacement
Autotransplantation allows for the replacement of missing teeth with the patient’s pre-existing teeth. This results in a more natural look and feel compared to prosthetic solutions such as dental implants or bridges.
Faster Healing and Integration
Autotransplantation typically involves faster healing and integration into the surrounding bone and tissues compared to other dental procedures. This is because the body recognizes the transplanted tooth as its own tissue, facilitating quicker healing.
Cost-Effectiveness
Autotransplantation is usually more cost-effective compared to other tooth replacement options, especially when considering the long-term maintenance and potential complications associated with prosthetic devices.
Preservation of Adjacent Teeth
Autotransplantation avoids the need to prepare or compromise adjacent teeth, as is often required with dental bridges. This helps preserve the integrity and health of neighboring teeth.
Meet Victoria
Our doctors strongly believe that evidence-based natural dentistry can provide optimal results for everything from trauma care to orthodontic space closure to aesthetic treatments. So, when Dr. Long’s young patient, Victoria, needed a procedure to replace a tooth lost to trauma, he believed the best treatment for her would involve a natural dental procedure called autotransplantation. The procedure uses a tooth from the back of the mouth to create a natural, new front tooth that would grow with Victoria and, like the rest of her teeth, last a lifetime.
“Dr. Long's passion for his work is unparalleled; he is at the office almost every day, driven by his love for his craft. This dedication has made him a true master in orthodontics. What sets Dr. Long apart is his innovative approach to patient care. For example, my 9-year-old daughter was expected to need a fake tooth in the front of her mouth for life. However, thanks to Dr. Long's expertise and creative thinking, she now has a beautiful permanent tooth, a solution no one else had proposed. His unique combination of passion, skill, and ingenuity makes Dr. Long truly exceptional.”
